How can I stop being a light sleeper and get a better night's sleep?

It takes me hours to get to sleep, and when I do, the slightest noise wakes me up. It's annoying because the rest of my family wake up every morning before I do - every word, cough, the shower, footsteps etc wakes me. I feel tired every single morning and am at my wit's end. What can I do?
